New Year's Wish 2016: Be Be Be, What Should I Be?

There’s only one corner of the universe you can be certain of improving, and that’s your own self.
I was tapping away on my keyboard when Stella, my youngest, approached: “What are you doing?”
“I’m writing. I’m almost done. What should I title what I’m writing?”
As a Kindergartener would, she naturally asked: “What’s a title?”
I responded: “It’s a name for something that you write.”
Her immediate reaction, so random, but so … well, let’s go with it: “Oh, I’m a fairy man and I like eating ketchup.”
Her response was off the cuff and nonsensical, but in it is what I want more of this year.
Fun.
Be fun.
I read A Human Life in Years a few days ago and cannot stop thinking about time, and the time I have here.
If you haven’t read it, I do say it’s worth your time.
The post puts into perspective one human life – a long life at that, 90 years! The writing got me thinking about how I want to spend my time in this lifetime.
So in 2106, I’d like to continue to prioritize what matters to me.
- Be loving.
- Be kind.
- Be fit.
- Be fun.
- Be quiet.
- Be purposeful.
- Be connected.
- Be a friend.
- Be flexible.
- Be helpful.
- Be thankful.
- Be honest.
- Be yourself.
- Be respectful.
- Be slow to anger.
As I write this, I wonder am thinking am I once again setting myself up for perfectionism and unnecessary self-inflicted pressure? It is too much?
Or is this simply a guideline to turn to as life pops up – sometimes remembering one, sometimes several?
I’m not all of these things at once, and yet I have all of those qualities in me.
How do you know how to be? … in this one moment … in this space and time …
For example, when I’m three cars deep in a seemingly unmoving line at the bank and feeling frustrated that it’s taking so long, how do I want to be? Be slow to anger. Be purposeful. Perhaps, be fun.
Being is on a spectrum, certainly, yet it helps me to think of being in opposites.
When I considered the other end of that being spectrum, it helped me to set my being priorities.
That’s to say, I’d rather not:
- Be hateful.
- Be mean.
- Be lazy.
- Be a buzz kill.
- Be loud.
- Be purposeless.
- Be disconnected.
- Be an enemy.
- Be rigid.
- Be unhelpful.
- Be thankless.
- Be a liar.
- Be someone else.
- Be disrespectful.
- Be quick to temper.
Knowing how I don’t want to be, quickly put into check the ways of being that I’m after in this lifetime.
Yes, sometimes I am quick to temper. Sometimes I’m rigid and a bit of a buzz kill. But none of those are my aim.
It’s not how I want to be.
This is why it’s useful for me to have a list of how I want to be.
Be this and be that.
Just be.
Yes and yes!
But how do you want to be?
Cheers to a 2016 full of all you want to be and more.
Ciao.
