Happy Fourth of July!

“For what avail the plough or sail, or land or life, if freedom fail?” Ralph Waldo Emerson

Happy Fourth of July!

We’re heading to my parents’ cottage in Door County for a few fun-filled days of hanging with family – kayaking, pontooning, playing in the sand and sun. We’ll gobble up s’mores by the campfire, eat al fresco, and launch fireworks on the Fourth.

What’s on the docket for you?

Do you do cake or pie on the Fourth? This year we’re thinking cake. This cake is whimsical and this one is classic. Which would you choose?

Or if you’re headed to a red, white, and blue BBQ, these “sparklers” are a sweet and salty crowd-pleaser. The girls are geeked to make them.

This sandwich is a family favorite as it’s easy to assemble for a gathering.

Here’s a green alternative to the traditional white paper plate. They look like paper, but are reusable. !Bang Bang!, our neighborhood spot, serves their pies and biscuits on these. I was mooning over the plates and bought a dozen for the cottage.

It’s a sunny holiday. Before you slater on the SPF, check out this slideshow. I’d can’t say been there … I’m still there.

I love this Fourth of July photo essay.

Those of you in the Chicagoland area, head over to Six Flags Great America. Goliath is now open! It’s pegged to be the world’s tallest, steepest, and fastest roller coaster. Would you go on it? I’m thinking, h#%@ no! I went on the American Eagle two weeks ago, and thought I was going to die. It marked the 30th anniversary of my first time (I was seven the first time I took the plunge). I got my fill of wooden coasters for another 30 years. I’m sticking with the Demon.

You could grab a couple cold ones and watch France vs. Germany in the World Cup quarter finals. Allez les bleus! I get a second dose of fireworks for Bastille Day on July 14th. Aren’t the fireworks stunning showing off the Eiffel Tower? I leave on Monday to lead a nine-day student trip to Paris, Provence and the Côte d’Azur. I’m so excited!

What ever way you celebrate, it’s a day that we can all step back and appreciate what enjoy in the name of freedom.

Cheers to freedom and a fun Fourth!

Ciao for now.
